The New Site Is Up!

August 2nd, 2007

Well if you are reading this, you probably already know, but… we finally made it! It took a little longer than we had hoped, but we turned out a quality product so it was worth the wait.

Thanks to Mark for helping out with the redesign and everyone out there who has been giving us positive feedback. We would love to keep hearing what you guys want to see on the site. We have some really cool features we plan on adding in the near future, but any input we can get to make the community stronger, the better.

Anyways, I invite everyone to go through the site, give us your opinions in the form of comments, and to keep check back as we add more features.

A Hip Hop Woodstock - Rock the Bells baby!

July 31st, 2007

logo_venue.gif

For anyone who ever though that a hip hop concert could not provide a trancendental experience I give you my thoughts on Sunday’s Rock The Bells Concert on Randall’s Island in NYC. Being involved in the hip hop scene for quite sometime, I’ve had the distinct pleasure of attending a vast number of hip hop concerts both on a large and small scale - but even without the copious amounts of ganja, this event without question topped them all.

I don’t think there has really ever been a collective of hip hop legends past and present - people I’ve always wanted to see like Public Enemy to imporant artist’s from today like Imortal Technique, to just performances that flat out surprised me like Cypress Hill (suprised in a good way) - Bottom Line: everyone brought their A-Game. I think really the only slightly dissapointing performance was from Mos Def, a miss-step which was quickly recovered after Talib joined up to sing the old Black Star shit.

Check out the lineup on the main stage from start to finish:

Boot Camp Clik
Jedi Mind Tricks
Immortal Technique
Pharaohe Monch
Talib Kweli
Mos Def
Black Star (both of them performing together)
Rakim
Cypress Hill
Public Enemy
Wu-Tang
Rage Against the Machine

With this lineup, the 83 dollar ticket was a total bargain. I’d without question pay at least 20-30 dollars per concert to see each of these acts headline their own shows. Plus the non-stop energy of having everyone go back to back…shieeeeet.

All in all I was there for about 10 hours, seeing everything from Immortal Technique to Rage. The wet weather really upped the energy - people were mud wrestling, moshing, and totally grooving baby!. All in all, it felt like a Woodstock-esque experience…even though I wasn’t very high.

Overall, a concert for the ages…Can’t wait to see the lineup next year.

Also, be on the look out for a whole new dropmagazine.com look. We are currently making some updates behind the scenes, and they should be done soon.

Thank you…

May 27th, 2007

…to everyone who has been supportive of dropmagazine.com so far. We have had a lot of good responses - a lot of people seem to like what we are trying to do, and that means a lot to us.

A quick note about the site, we are currently making a lot of upgrades both in the design and behind the scenes that will make dropmagazine.com a much better place to visit. We will not stop making content updates to the site in this time, so keep checking back to get the drop on all things hip hop and to watch the site grow.

Some upcoming features include user commenting on articles, a media page with videos and music, as well as improved design and navigation.

Response to an Imus Post

May 2nd, 2007

I recently received a wallpost on the Drop Magazine facebook that I feel I have a responsibility to confront. The message reads:

God damn am I tired of hearing about Don fucking Imus. The fact of the matter is that his “nappy headed hoes” comment could only be seen as offensive by the most fucking ignorant of people and he shouldnt have been fired(not for that anyway). Dont get me wrong I fuckin hate Imus but because hes ALWAYS been an asshole not because he made some joke that a bunch of idiot ultra-liberal hippy morons deemed not to be PC and therefore intolerable. I love ya Sam but you lost a couple of respect points for getting your mag mixed up in this idiocy.

While I always appreciate peoples comments the fact is that we are a hip hop magazine and as a hip hop magazine we have a responsibility to cover hip hop issues - and there has not been a bigger and more cultural changing hip hop issue since the early 90s than this imus scandal. The way dropmagazine.com is set up is to provide intelligent journalistic insights into important hip hop issues which is why we have presented two really good articles that have to do with two different aspects of the imus scandal. If anyone feels like they want to write a piece which talks about why Imus’ comments can only be construed as offensive by ridiculous people than we’d love to put it up, but the fact is that millions of people HAVE gotten offended and have consequently lashed out against hip hop for it. The bottom line is, hip hop is our job and thereby dropmagazine.com DOES have a reponsibility to get mixed up in this Imus business.

Please leave comments with your thoughts
